Mile High Blues hosts performances to showcase the highest artistic standards of Blues movement, musicality, and expression. These will be the only performances throughout the weekend. The show will about 1.5 hours, which will include time to share our Colorado Community and Leadership awards.
Mile High Blues acknowledges and honors the commitment of individuals who make significant contributions to the advancement, development, and preservation of Blues dance. We believe in a community where each member is a knowledgeable, competent and contributing, and recognize someone who exemplifies the value and contribution of mentorship that each of us may offer. These are the categories in which you may nominate someone from the local Colorado Blues dance scene. *You may nominate yourself and we may follow up with a request for a letter of recommendation. Nomination deadline is April 15. Responses and invitations sent in early May 2017.
Leadership in Individual Development in Blues Dance
This award recognizes an individual who strives to develop a deep understanding of Blues dance movement, music, connection, and context. They actively seek out and take advantage of education opportunities and dedicated practice. They are most likely a self-motivated, autonomous learner. This individual is not only a student of Blues, but is an active participant within our Colorado Blues dance scene. You see them supporting and dancing at different venues, dancing with new dancers, and contributing to a positive atmosphere for the night. They are happy to share their love of Blues with dancers and non-dancers alike, and may often be seen introducing new people to our wonderful dance.
Leadership in Blues Context and Education
This award recognizes an individual for their efforts in researching and sharing the Blues narrative, and its rich history, context, and legacy. They seek to develop a nuanced understanding of and relationship with the art form. They seek to preserve and share the wisdom, artistic contributions, and legacy of individuals who have shaped Blues. Ways in which they may share their research and understandings are though writing, blogging, social media (forums and videos), lectures, workshops, concerts, dialoguing, or sharing at social activities. Embodying the spirit of and lessons taught by Blues, this individual can be seen engaging with others from a place devoid of stereotypes and assumptions, intentionally working to right prejudice and discrimination, and working to foster a better world of mutual respect and understanding.
Leadership in Blues DJing and Musical Understanding
This award recognizes an exemplary Blues DJ who brings life and variety to our Blues dance scene with treasured and new recorded Blues music. This individual demonstrates a strong understanding of Blues music structures and contexts, and continually develops their skills to positively affect the community’s relationship with Blues music. They seek to deeply understand the relationship of music and dance, build relationships with live Blues bands, dialogue around DJing philosophies, and explore their role as entertainers and teachers (through music). They understand the importance of quality DJed music in dancer/community retention. Dancers love their sets and find them authentic to Blues.
Leadership in Community Growth and Impact of Blues Dance
This award recognizes an individual for their efforts in creating, growing, or educating our local Blues community. They may be a consistent scene organizer building a diverse, welcoming, and dedicated dance space. They may be an individual who advocates for the development of safe spaces, policies, and/or practices. They may be an instructor dedicated to our local dancers’ skillful and artistic growth in Blues dance through quality instruction and integrity to the Blues context. Most likely this person probably has a passion for Blues dance and music and seeks to share it with the world at large.
